Coast Mountain Folk - Fiddle & Cello Retreat

More Info:

This weekend retreat is geared towards string players (fiddle/violin, viola, cello, bass). Other melody and accompaniment instrumentalists interested in Celtic music and ensemble playing are welcome to join. Creating a high-quality learning experience is our top priority.

Topics include:
• Learning traditional and contemporary tunes
• Ornamentation and bowing
• Harmony and accompaniment ideas
• Playing with others
• Step Dance (Elective)
• Guitar Accompaniment (Elective, with guest instructor, Jennifer Mauel)

COVID protocols:
• For the safety of all, we kindly request that you take a Rapid Antigen Test prior to attending. Thank you for taking this extra precaution.

Accommodation:
• For those coming from out of town, there are some lovely B&Bs, hotels, and campgrounds in the area.
• The Squamish Estuary and Mamquam River trails offer beautiful views of the mountains! Murrin Loop and the Sea to Sky Gondola trails are other local favourites.

$25 Saturday Concert only (Adult)

$200 Weekend Retreat - Early Bird (register before May 1)
$225 Weekend Retreat - Regular (register from May 1 - July 1)
$120 Saturday only

Weekend Retreat fees include full weekend programming, with 9 hours of instruction, helpful resource materials (including sheet music and recordings), the Saturday night concert, and coffee/tea/refreshments.

 

Instructor Bios:

 

JOCELYN PETTIT:

From the West Coast of British Columbia, Jocelyn Pettit is a vibrant fiddle player, stepdancer, singer, and music educator. As a 5-time Canadian Folk Music Award Nominee, and Western Canadian Music Award Nominee, Jocelyn has released three solo albums, and two duo albums with Ellen Gira.  She has toured across Canada and internationally, appeared on CBC and BBC television and radio, and holds a Master of Music Degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

With a passion for sharing the joy of music and dance, Jocelyn has taught classes, workshops, and string programs at numerous schools, camps, and festivals. She is the founder of Coast Mountain Folk, celebrating folk and traditional music through community sessions, workshops & camps in the Sea to Sky Region.

 
 

ROSIE CARVER:

Based in Vancouver, Rosie Carver is the founder and director of the West Coast Fiddleheads, and a long-time member of the Celtic folk group, Blackthorn. She also performs with the lovely trio, Triskellion, and with Blackthorn Blossoms; and has appeared as a guest artist with several ensembles and orchestras. With over 30 years of performance and teaching experience, Rosie is a member of the BC Registered Music Teachers Association (BCRMTA) and Associate for the Royal Conservatory of Toronto (ARCT), with a Diploma in Violin Performance.

Rosie and her partner, Michael Viens, founded and launched the Cat Nap Music Camp, which celebrated its 5th Anniversary in 2024.

 
 
 

JEFF FARAGHER:

Based in the Kootenays, and known for his enrapturing performance style, Jeff Faragher is a natural entertainer and one of the region’s most active performers. With extensive training and experience as a classical cellist, he has played as a soloist with Symphony orchestras throughout Western Canada, in addition to playing in several chamber ensembles.  Currently, he is Artistic Director for Symphony of the Kootenays. Jeff spent much of his studies at McGill and the University of Alberta focusing on contemporary styles on the cello, including exploring Celtic, gypsy-jazz, middle-eastern, tango, and flamenco music.

As a music educator, Jeff is passionate about bringing his expertise to the community in a supportive, focused and fun atmosphere.  With more than 25 years of helping cellists reach their goals, Jeff has been inspiring students of all ages, and has worked with many festivals across Western Canada.

 
 

JENNIFER MAUEL:

Jennifer Mauel is a guitarist and singer-songwriter based on the West Coast of Canada. Growing up, Jennifer was immersed in Celtic folk music and developed a passion for guitar accompaniment for traditional fiddle music.  This led her to spend time living in Glasgow, Scotland where she learned from the best and brightest of the vibrant Scottish folk scene.

Jennifer will be teaching a Guitar Accompaniment workshop, exploring chord voicings and strumming patterns in Celtic music.
